Tom Skinner’s Skyline Fest
On Thursday, October 13th, 36 Oklahoma songwriters gathered in downtown Tulsa’s Brady Arts District to play a festival celebrating the life and legacy of Oklahoma Music Hall of Fame honoree, Tom Skinner. The inaugural Tom Skinner’s Skyline Music Festival employed a song swap format that paired single musicians in acoustic sets across three intimate venues. This unique format resulted in sets that invoked the spirit of Skinner, along with several of the songs he penned and made famous including Skyline Radio (for which the festival is named), Crystal, Water Your Own Yard and Blind Man to name a few. The festival drew about 275 fans and raised $4,000 to benefit Oklahoma musicians through the Red Dirt Relief Fund.
Skinner was often quoted for his description of Red Dirt music as “more of a brotherhood and a community thing than it is necessarily a style.” This festival seeks to celebrate that community through a unique format that will surprise music fans of all kinds. The festival name comes from Skinner’s song, Skyline Radio.
