We are pleased to announce the date and details for Bob Childers’ Gypsy Cafe:
Wednesday, April 29th, 2015
More than 30 singer/songwriters from mixed Oklahoma genres and geographies will play an acoustic-style festival in Stillwater to celebrate the tradition started by the so-called Godfather of Red Dirt music, Bob Childers. Benefitting the Red Dirt Relief Fund and hosted by the Red Dirt Rangers and Bo Phillips, a full lineup for the event will be released in February 2015.
Now in its fourth year, Gypsy Café continues to evolve. Fans can still plan to hear Oklahoma’s best talent, both emerging and renowned, in intimate acoustic settings. But the format will resemble a tribute show, where musicians invite old and new friends to sit-in during sets, showcasing a few Childers tunes throughout.
According to Katie Dale, event organizer and Red Dirt Relief Fund Board member, “Gypsy Café was created to celebrate the singer/songwriter tradition fostered at The Farm by Bob Childers. The name Gypsy Café comes from a Childers’ song. He was always central to this event—now we’re finally putting his name on it.”
The Red Dirt Relief Fund, a 501(c) 3 non-profit organization that provides a safety net of critical assistance to Oklahoma musicians, took over management of the festival in the fall of 2013 after Red Bull hosted the event in spring of 2011 and 2012. RDRF Board of Directors decided to merge the Gypsy Café event with another successful event held every spring at Eskimo Joe’s—the Bob Childers’ Tribute Show.
The result will be a musical adventure that allows fans to bounce from venue to venue, experiencing the best of what Oklahoma music has to offer in a new and surprising way. According to Eskimo Joe’s General Manager and Red Dirt Relief Fund Board member, Tim Holland, ”Even when we know the lineup for the Childers’ Tribute show, there’s always a surprise when friends decide to stop by.” At the 2014 Tribute Show, Cody Canada and Stoney LaRue came to town last minute and went on stage together in the final set.
Current event venues include Eskimo Joe’s, Stonewall Tavern and George’s Stables in Stillwater. Event passes that allow access to all venues will be sold beginning in February.
